A turning point for Somalia’s digital future

Chelsea Village Hotel was honoured to host a landmark event in Somalia’s journey toward digital transformation. On 13 April 2025, representatives from Somalia’s National Communications Authority and Starlink/SpaceX convened in our secure Mogadishu conference centre to formalise Starlink’s ISP license, marking a significant step in enhancing the nation’s internet connectivity.

Bridging the digital divide

Somalia has long grappled with limited internet infrastructure, relying heavily on undersea cables like EASSy and DARE1, which are susceptible to disruptions. This dependency has left many rural and remote communities disconnected. Starlink’s introduction of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology offers a resilient alternative, promising high-speed internet access without extensive ground infrastructure.

The licensing ceremony, held at Chelsea Village Hotel, was attended by key figures, including NCA Director General Mustafa Yasin Sheik, who emphasised the milestone’s significance in bridging Somalia’s digital divide. Minister of Communications and Technology Mohamed Mo’allim highlighted the government’s commitment to expanding internet services to all Somalis, regardless of location.
