A Guide to Mogadishu’s Restrictions: Prohibited Items and Practical Travel Tips

Somalia has strict laws around what you can and can’t bring into the country, and airport security can be thorough. Preparation is key.

At Chelsea Village Hotel, we want your arrival in Mogadishu to feel seamless and stress-free. The more you know before you fly, the smoother your journey will be – and our team is always here to help if you’re unsure about anything.

This short guide will help explain what to pack, and what to leave behind.

What is prohibited in Mogadishu?

Alcohol

Somalia is a Muslim country and national rules reflect this, so importing or possessing alcoholic beverages is prohibited.

A sign with a wine bottle and glass struck through with a red line, indicating that no alcohol is allowed.

As a Muslim country, Somalia’s laws must comply with Sharia law. Using or supplying alcohol can be punished with a lengthy prison sentence, often without bail.

Pork

Pork and pork-derived products are not permitted in Somalia – which includes anything containing pork gelatine, flavourings or pork by-products.

Drugs and medication

Illegal drugs are taken extremely seriously in Somalia, with very harsh penalties. You may bring in prescription medication, but you need to bring the necessary doctor’s prescription with and check ahead of time to ensure your medication is allowed in Somalia.

Remember to:

  • Bring only personal-use quantities
  • Keep everything in its original packaging
  • Carry a copy of your prescription or a doctor’s letter listing the name of the medication, your dosage and that it is for personal use throughout your trip

Nicotine

Cigarettes are legal in Somalia, but nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)/Snus are illegal and will be confiscated on arrival. If you rely on NRT for personal use, bring a prescription and keep a receipt, but be prepared that it could still be confiscated, as NRTs are not regulated as medicinal products.

Sensitive content

Anything considered offensive or against Islamic values can be stopped at customs. This includes explicit images, provocative content, material that contradicts Islamic teachings or religious items meant for converting others.

Drones and photography

Drones and radio-controlled model aircraft are generally prohibited from import and use. In Mogadishu, drones are treated as high-risk items due to sensitive security environments, especially around Aden Adde International Airport. If you bring a drone without formal authorisation, expect it to be confiscated. Check ahead of time for updated legal requirements to avoid any fines/prosecution.

Photography also requires caution. Always refrain from taking photos of government or military buildings, checkpoints, critical infrastructure, airports or aircraft.

Drones are heavily restricted in Somalia, particularly around critical infrastructure such as airports, as authorities see them as a security risk.

Gambling

All gambling-related equipment – including devices, machinery or tools used for betting or games of chance – is prohibited in Somalia. Playing cards are commonly considered tools for gambling, and in a strictly conservative environment like Somalia, simply possessing them, even for personal, non-monetary games, could lead to scrutiny or legal issues.

Other things to consider

Mogadishu is a conservative city, so make sure to dress modestly. During Ramadan, refrain from eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours.

Ask for advice when travelling to Mogadishu

Check your home country’s travel advisory and ask the team at Chelsea Village Hotel to pre-advise you about how to handle the transportation of any legitimate items you must carry, such as medical devices.

Whenever you’re unsure, make conservative choices and carry clear documentation with you. Your smoothest path through Mogadishu is to arrive with nothing that could be misread and paperwork for anything that mightbe.
